Cloud Technology – Why you should upgrade your skills now!

Cloud Technology skills

Organizations are increasingly using cloud computing for new initiatives or to replace legacy systems. What this means is that the spending that previously went to building and maintaining traditional IT solutions is being diverted to the cloud. The growing preference for cloud first and cloud smart services means that cloud adoption rates are growing at 20% CAGR. The only reason why this number isn’t higher is because of a global cloud technology skill shortage. Gartner attests that insufficient cloud skills is delaying half of enterprise IT migrations by 2 years!

In this post, are 5 reasons why you should jump on the proverbial bandwagon and start to upgrade your cloud skills.

Reason 1: – The Cloud Technology Market is Growing Fast

According to Gartner, cloud technology is one of the fastest growing segments of IT spend today. They predict that end-user cloud spend will grow at 18% in 2021 to over $300 billion. That number grows another 20% in 2022 to $360 billion. This trend will continue into the future! For anyone working in this space, it presents a huge market to tap into.

Reason 2: – Organizations are Becoming Cloud First

Companies are looking to cloud as their first choice for their strategic digital transformations and executives are requiring more justification for any traditional on-premise solution proposals. Consequently, spending on traditional solutions is being reallocated to the cloud as a result of this growing preference for cloud first. As a result, 45% of all IT spending on application software and business process development will have shifted from traditional avenues to the cloud, It’s predicted that by 2024,. That 45% is a big number- if you are a player in IT space make sure you take note of it now, so you don’t miss the boat later!

Reason 3: -The Cloud Technology Knowledge Gap

Until now, cloud migration strategies were more geared towards “lift and shift” or “copy and paste”. By that I mean organizations have just taken their current systems and moved them over to EC2 or Azure VMs. Little has happened in the way of modernization or refactoring system and solution designs to be more cloud native. These “lift and shift” projects do little to develop cloud native skills such as an understanding of the micro or managed services cloud vendors offer. This is therefore, creating a market where organizations cannot train and certify people quickly enough to satisfy the demand for knowledgeable cloud professionals.

Reason 4:- Competitive Edge

The pay-as-you-go model that cloud technology vendors provide lowers the barrier to play. Consequently, if you’re starting a business, you no longer need to make a large capital investment in infrastructure and systems. You no longer need to provision large compute and storage resources that will sit idle most of the day. With cloud you only pay for what you use which can mean huge cost savings over competitors. If you need to grow, you can scale up easily and efficiently with a well designed cloud strategy.

Reason 5: -Career and Salary Progression

We noted already, that there is increased demand and low supply for skilled cloud professionals. Economics 101 states that when demand is high and supply is low, then prices will rise. That bodes well for your salary expectations if you are an experienced cloud professional. Already, experienced cloud professionals are at a premium in the career market.
